For the teacher/project leader:
We've designed our art activities to create the context for creating the
final mural. We have found that taking several steps before doing the
mural helps students get prepared for creating their mural image so it
delivers the vision they really want to share with others. "World
Peace" is a big context for most, so we start by having students
look at themselves to find peace within, and move out from there. Refer
to the "ripple" effect.
All activity sheets are included in your package and on the CD for printing additional copies. Feel free to do as many of these activities as you like. Most programs will take eight weeks to complete. We request you complete at least one or more activities from each of the categories before moving to the mural activity. We also request that you complete activities #13 and #14 right before engaging in creating the mural as these activities really set up the context for the mural and the pictures the students create for these two activities can serve as the basis for the mural itself.
Categories are based on activities at the level of self/individual and at the level of community/group. The final project, the mural, will be at the level of society/world. After completing at least one activity in each category you may move on to your final activity, the mural. If you have the time to do more than one activity in a category we encourage it as it helps reinforce the outcomes of the mural project. Activities below are not age specific but you may feel certain ones are more appropriate to your students than others, so choose accordingly. Example: Activity #1 and #2 are great for all ages, #3,# 4, #5 and #6 for younger students. Please contact me with any questions or concerns at jclapp@wherepeacelives.org. Some of these activities are based upon lesson plans from Beth Teolis's book, Ready-To-Use Conflict-Resolution Activities for Elementary Students which we got permission to use. If you love these activities, we highly suggest buying the book, as it's full of great ideas.
Elementary Level
Activity level #1 - Peace activities at
the level of self/individual
Activity #1: What's Peaceful To Me...What's NOT!
Objective: Students will
examine what is peaceful for them and what things are not peaceful
for them.
Activity #2: THE WAY IT REALLY IS
Objective: Students learn
to trust one another, be open and honest with themselves and others.
Learn that they are not alone in how they feel or how things occur
for them.
Activity #3: What's Really Going On?
Objective: Students learn
that the anger they display at times is not really about the present
issue. This activity explores what is really behind their angry
behavior when an unresolved past issue "haunts" them.
Activity #4: A Rainbow Of Peace
Objective: Students
learn that peace begins inside ourselves before it can be spread
to others. The "pot of gold" at the end of our conflict
is for both parties in the conflict to end up feeling peaceful.
Activity #5: Which Will I Feed?
Objective: Students
learn that peace and anger live within all of us, all the time.
The important thing is which emotion we choose to have control us
in any situation that we may find ourselves in, especially a conflict,
or an argument. Which will we choose to feed?
Activity #6: Stormy and Smiley
Objective: Students
express feelings while enjoying creating similies. This activity
is a great way to have the students start to be able to turn verbal
thoughts into visual thoughts.
Activity level #2 - Peace activities at
the level of Community and group
Activity #7: SEE WHAT WE SEE!
(This activity is an additional cost if done through WPL)
Objective: Students
are given the opportunity to use the camera as a way of expressing
how peace shows up in their environment. This includes school, family,
community, and other activities students are involved in with others.
Activity #8: WOW!
Objective: Students
are given the opportunity to give compliments to their peers. They
will also find out how treasured they themselves are.
Activity #9: Put Yourself in Somebody Else's Shoes
Objective: Students
will learn the life skill of seeing a problem from another person's
point of view.
Activity #10: A NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT IT!
Objective: Students
will learn to brainstorm peaceful solutions for conflicts outside
themselves through collage and words.
Activity #11: Were You Ever a Peacemaker?
Objective: Help
students structure peacemaker images through interviews. Have them
understand what it takes to be a peacemaker and to see that they
could be a peacemaker in their own community, at school and even
with their friends.
Activity #12: I'm a Peace Builder, a Mediator, a Visionary!
Objective: Help
students learn about being peacebuilders through drawings.
Activity Level #3 - Peace activities at
the level of society and world
Activity #13: SYMBOLISM IN MY CULTURE
Objective: Students
learn about symbolism and the power of icons in their own country,
religion, community, and culture.
Activity #14: MURALS IN HISTORY
Objective: Students
will learn about the impact murals have had on many societies around
the world throughout history and why murals have played an important
role in social activism.
Activity #15: INTERNATIONAL PEACE MURAL
Objective:
Have the students create a clear and powerful message
for a new possibility for peace in the world. One that will travel
the globe as their personal message of inspiration and peaceful
action to others.
Secondary School Level
Activity level #1 - Peace activities at
the level of self/individual
Activity #1: What's Peaceful To Me...What's NOT!
Objective: Students

for them.

Activity #3: THE DIFFERENT FACES OF ME
Objective: Students
explore the concept of creating a self portrait based not upon what
they see on the outside, but by what is going on on the inside.
Students will create a self portrait that explores the side of them
that deals with fear, conflict, anger, resentment, defiance, loss,
or pain AND a portrait that explores the side of them that reveals
love, peace, joy, contentment, compassion, and trust.
Activity #4: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE...MY PEACE STORY
Objective: Students
learn to communicate about themselves in a way that paints a picture
and a story clearly and delivers a communication that can be gotten
by any viewer of the art. What students will look to create is a
visual storyboard of their life...their past, present, and their
future that shows how they came to know themselves as peacemakers
in the world.
Activity level #2 - Peace activities at
the level of Community and group
Activity #5: SEE WHAT WE SEE!
(this activity is an additional cost if done through WPL)
Objective: Students
are given the opportunity to use the camera as a way of expressing
how peace shows up in their environment. This includes school, family,
community, and other activities students are involved in with others.
Activity #6: THAT'S A RAP!
Objective: Students
work in teams to create a music video that speaks to peace, friendship,
understanding. Video can be scripted (storyboard) and/or shot on
video as a final piece.
Activity #7: IF ONLY IT WENT THIS WAY! Learning to trust my
voice and the voice of others.
Objective: Students
learn to brainstorm peaceful solutions for conflicts outside themselves
through collage, art, and words.
Activity #8: OUR FAMILY RECIPE FOR PEACE
Objective: Help
students structure peacemaker images through interviews. Have them
understand what it takes to be a peacemaker and to see that they
could be a peacemaker in their own community, at school and even
with their friends.
Activity #9: I'm a peacebuilder, a mediator, a visionary!
Objective: Help
students learn about being peacebuilders through drawings. You may
want to bring in pictures and information about specific people
in history who have been peacebuilders, mediators, visionaries and
activitists.
Activity #10: What I See in Them
Objective: Students
explore the concept of creating a portrait of 3 fellow school mates,
people they don't know well or have never met. They have to introduce
themselves and explain what they are doing and reach out to learn
about each person. The objective is to allow students to experience
and discover something new about people they don't know and express
their appreciation for that through art.
Activity #11: EYE OPENING!
Objective: Students
experience they are not alone in their experiences, feelings, circumstances,
beliefs, situations .
Activity #12: WE ARE ALL CONNECTED, WE ARE NOT ALONE!
Objective: Students
learn they know more people and are connected to more people than
they may think. Students connect to themselves and then move outward
from themselves into their community.
Activity Level #3 - Peace activities at

Students will learn about the impact art has on the world,
on politics, and on society as a whole. This is an impact that has
happened historically and is sill happening currently.
Activity #16: INTERNATIONAL PEACE MURAL
Objective:
Have the students create a clear and powerful message
for a new possibility for peace in the world. One that will travel
the globe as their personal message of inspiration and peaceful
action to others.
